Beyond the parks and playgrounds

Our family guide to Kingston covers the local stuff — riverside parks, the market, Hampton Court. But sometimes you want a proper day out. The kind where kids are so exhausted they fall asleep in the car home.

Good news: two of the best family attractions in Surrey sit within 20 minutes of Kingston. Chessington World of Adventures combines a theme park, zoo, and aquarium. Hobbledown Adventure Farm near Epsom has the kind of outdoor playgrounds that make children lose their minds with joy.

We’ve visited both, read hundreds of parent reviews, and put together the honest guide we wish we’d had. Including the downsides — because knowing what to expect is how you have a good day rather than an expensive disappointing one.

Quick picks

Chessington World of Adventures

Ages: 2+ (best for under-10s) | Duration: Full day | Cost: From ~£22 (toddler deals), ~£35+ standard online | Under-90cm: Free

Why we picked it

Chessington is the best UK theme park for young children — and that’s not us being parochial because it’s nearby. The under-5 offering is genuinely unmatched. Julia Donaldson rides (Gruffalo River Ride, Room on the Broom), a CoComelon area, and Paw Patrol zones mean toddlers and pre-schoolers get their own properly themed experiences, not just scaled-down adult rides.

But the real strength is variety. Theme park rides, a zoo, and a SEA LIFE Centre all on one site means you can switch things up throughout the day. When the queue for Gruffalo gets long, go see the penguins. When little legs need a break from walking, sit down for Tomb Blaster — an interactive laser dark ride that works for all ages and keeps everyone entertained.

Who it’s best for

  • Under-5s: This is Chessington’s sweet spot. The Julia Donaldson and CoComelon areas are built specifically for this age group.
  • Mixed-age families: Younger ones do the character rides while older kids (8+) hit Vampire (a suspended rollercoaster that’s been a favourite for years) and Croc Drop.
  • All ages: Zufari, a jeep safari through animal enclosures, is consistently praised across review sites as a highlight for everyone.

Practical details

  • Book online always. Gate prices are significantly higher. The app shows live queue times — use it.
  • Reserve & Ride is worth it at peak times. One family on FreeTimeWithTheKids reported completing 20 rides in a single day using it.
  • Best strategy: Go on a weekday during term time. Weekends and school holidays mean long queues and a very different experience.
  • Getting there: 15-20 minutes by car from Kingston. Free parking is not included — the car park is paid.

The honest downsides

We’d be doing you a disservice if we didn’t mention these. Chessington has a 1.5/5 on Trustpilot from over 700 reviews — and while that’s skewed by winter and off-season complaints, the recurring themes are real:

  • Food is extortionate. Basic meals run £15-17. Bring a packed lunch if budget matters to you.
  • Rides break down frequently. Multiple reviews mention arriving to find key rides closed without prior notice. Check the app on the day.
  • Off-season (October to March) is a gamble. Many rides close with poor communication. If you’re going outside peak season, check what’s actually open before booking.
  • Aggressive upselling. From queue-jump passes to photo packages, be prepared to say no repeatedly.

Our verdict

For families with children under 10, Chessington is the best theme park day out near Kingston — nothing else in the area combines rides, animals, and aquarium in one ticket. Just go in with realistic expectations: book online, visit midweek if you can, bring your own food, and check ride availability before you travel. Do that, and you’ll have a brilliant day.

Hobbledown Adventure Farm

Ages: 1-12 (best for 2-8) | Duration: Full day | Cost: From £14 off-peak, £18 peak. Toddler tickets from £12.50. Under-2s free. | Parking: Free

Why we picked it

Hobbledown’s play castles are the main event, and they’re spectacular — multi-level structures with different areas scaled for different ages, the kind of thing that makes children sprint ahead of you the moment they’re through the gate. Surrey Live’s headline — “I finally took my kid to Hobbledown and now understand why parents rave about it” — sums up the experience accurately.

But it’s not just playgrounds. There are underground tunnels, a mining village, water play areas, and over 200 animals including lemurs, wallabies, otters, meerkats, alpacas, and Shetland ponies. The indoor play barn is 14,000 square feet with vertical trampolines and, crucially, a dedicated gated toddler area for under-3s. The Imaginarium combines sensory play with live animal encounters.

As Surrey Live put it: “You could really spend all day there.” We’d agree.

Who it’s best for

  • Ages 2-8: The absolute sweet spot. Old enough to tackle the play castles, young enough to be thrilled by everything.
  • Mixed-weather days: The indoor play barn means a sudden downpour doesn’t ruin the trip. Not many outdoor attractions can say that.
  • Toddlers specifically: The gated under-3s area in the indoor barn means you’re not constantly chasing them toward the big-kid equipment.

Practical details

  • Book ahead. Tickets are cheaper online and sessions can sell out on peak days.
  • Free parking. A welcome change from most attractions.
  • Opening times: Peak (weekends/holidays) 9am-6pm, off-peak (term-time weekdays) 9:30am-5:30pm.
  • Getting there: About 20 minutes by car from Kingston via the A243.
  • Food on site: Hobnosh Restaurant and Pizza Cottage. Two options, which is more than most farm parks manage.
  • Climbing towers and zorbing: Extra cost (£3.50 for towers), book via the Hobbledown app.

The honest downsides

Hobbledown scores 2.4/5 on Trustpilot from 40 reviews, though this is heavily skewed by birthday party complaints. Here’s what actually matters for a day visit:

  • Price is the number-one complaint. At £18 peak for a child, it adds up quickly for larger families. The afternoon saver from 2:30pm helps if you only want half a day.
  • Food is overpriced. Mac and cheese at £7.50 is typical. Same advice as Chessington: packed lunches save real money.
  • Toilets are far from the outdoor play areas. With young children, this is genuinely annoying. Plan for it.
  • Some animal enclosures can be empty without notice. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing if your child is set on seeing a specific animal.
  • Birthday parties: Reviews are consistently terrible across every platform. For a day visit you’ll be fine, but avoid booking a party here.

Our verdict

Hobbledown is the best adventure farm within easy reach of Kingston, and for children aged 2-8 it’s close to perfect. The mix of indoor and outdoor play means weather barely matters, the animal variety goes well beyond the usual sheep-and-goats farm park, and the play castles are genuinely impressive. Go on a weekday if you can, bring a picnic, and expect to stay all day.

Rainy day backup

Little Peeps Soft Play — Chessington

Ages: 0-8 | Indoor: Yes | Parking: Free

When the weather makes outdoor plans impossible, Little Peeps on Hook Road in Chessington is a solid fallback. Jungle-themed soft play across two floors, with a separate baby and toddler zone for under-2s and a bigger multi-level structure for older children. Upstairs adds duckpin bowling and gaming zones — enough variety to burn off a couple of hours of pent-up energy.

Open Monday to Saturday 9am-5pm, Sunday 10am-5pm. Cafe on-site with barista coffee (for the adults) and hot food. No booking required — just turn up.

Not a “day out” in the same league as Chessington or Hobbledown, but for those mornings when rain is hammering down and you need children occupied and tired, it does the job.

Our take: Hobbledown for ages 2-8 and any weather. Chessington for the under-5 theme park experience or families with older kids who want rollercoasters. Both benefit enormously from midweek visits.

Combine with local

These day-out attractions pair well with our local family guide. A few combinations that work:

  • Hobbledown morning + Surbiton afternoon: Drive back via Surbiton, grab lunch on Maple Road, let kids run around at a local playground.
  • Chessington + Little Peeps: If the weather turns during a Chessington visit, Little Peeps is five minutes up the road.
  • Weekend split: Chessington or Hobbledown on Saturday, a free park day (Bushy Park, Canbury Gardens) on Sunday to balance the budget.

Practical tips for all days out

Save money

  • Always book online — both Chessington and Hobbledown are cheaper in advance.
  • Bring packed lunches. Food at both venues is overpriced. This is the single biggest money-saver.
  • Go off-peak. Term-time weekdays are cheaper, quieter, and more enjoyable at both.
  • Check for toddler deals. Chessington has specific under-5 offers. Hobbledown’s toddler ticket (£12.50 weekday) includes one adult.

Timing

  • Arrive at opening. The first 90 minutes at any attraction are the quietest. Do the popular stuff first.
  • Afternoons empty out. If you’re not bothered about doing everything, arriving after lunch can work — and Hobbledown offers an afternoon saver from 2:30pm.

What to bring

  • Spare clothes. Hobbledown has water play. Chessington has water rides. You will need them.
  • Snacks. For the car, for the queue, for the meltdown. Always snacks.
  • The app. Both Chessington and Hobbledown have apps. Download before you go — Chessington’s shows live queue times, Hobbledown’s handles bookings for extras.
  • Sun cream and rain jackets. This is England. Bring both.

FAQs

Which is better — Chessington or Hobbledown? Depends on ages. Under 5 or over 8: Chessington. Ages 2-8: Hobbledown. Both are excellent at what they do.

Is Chessington worth it for toddlers? Absolutely — it’s the best UK theme park for under-5s. The Julia Donaldson, CoComelon, and Paw Patrol areas are purpose-built for this age group. Just avoid off-season when rides may be closed.

Can we do Hobbledown in half a day? You can, but you’ll feel rushed. Most families find they could spend a full day. If time is limited, arrive for the 2:30pm afternoon saver and focus on the play castles and indoor barn.

What if it rains? Hobbledown handles rain better thanks to the 14,000 sq ft indoor play barn. For Chessington, rain significantly reduces the experience — many rides close in bad weather. Little Peeps soft play is the pure rainy-day option.

How far are these from Kingston? Both are about 15-20 minutes by car. Chessington is closer (practically adjacent to the borough). Hobbledown is near Epsom via the A243.

Are there cheaper alternatives? Our local family guide covers free options: Bushy Park, Canbury Gardens, Richmond Park, Kingston Market. All excellent, all free.
