Waggon and Horses
The locals' local. Less polished than its neighbours, more genuine because of it — this is where Surbiton goes to actually relax.
Why we love it
An underrated gem with an authentic crowd and none of the pretense. The pub Surbiton residents keep to themselves.
The Waggon and Horses is the kind of pub that doesn't need to try. No chalkboard menus announcing "craft this" and "artisan that" — just a proper boozer where conversations run long and nobody's taking photos for Instagram. The crowd here skews slightly older, slightly more settled, people who've lived in Surbiton long enough to know which pubs are for showing off and which are for actually drinking. This is firmly the latter. The real ales are well-kept, the staff know the regulars by name, and there's a comfortable rhythm to the place that chain pubs can't manufacture. It won't make any "best beer garden" lists, and that's exactly why the people who love it keep coming back. Some pubs are destinations; the Waggon is a local. **Local's Tip:** Thursday evenings tend to be the sweet spot — busy enough to have atmosphere, quiet enough to actually hear yourself think. The pie is better than it has any right to be.
